Meet a Little Kicker Coach - Coach Andrew

Name: Andrew Curtis

Venues of Little Kickers coaching at: Pacific Pines

Love the game of Soccer and have been playing for 37 years. Have played here on the Gold Coast, Sydney and Japan and have been coaching Junior soccer for about 5 years.

Coaching perspective on Little Kickers:   A great forum in which children can partake in, learn and gain skills very important for their development.

What is your favourite little kickers game: Obstacle course

From the coach – I have had the privilege to grow up and play a large part of my soccer on the Gold Coast and vouch for the great environment we have for the game here. It is refreshing to see now we have complementing this a fantastic forum like Little Kickers that gives children the opportunity in which to start enjoying and learning the game here at an early age.

Congratulations must go to each and everyone who has taken up the above-mentioned opportunity for their child/children. For me it has been personally rewarding because it has been fantastic to see the development and gains made over time by all of the little kickers at Pacific Pines.

It is further refreshing to know that the little kickers will carry the skills that they have learnt on to whatever they do later in life - and who knows they may even get to play for such fantastic teams as Queensland Roar and Liverpool one day!

Hoping to see you all out at the centre soon

Coach Andrew

Meet a Little Kicker Coach - Coach Kitty

Coach Kitty our Assistant Coach at Southport has this to say about Little Kickers!

Prior to starting at Little Kickers I was living in America for a year playing soccer.  We played soccer daily as well as helped out as volunteer coaches for children. I have also played in Japan and Korea,  all these international experiences have given me a great insight into how different countries approach the game of soccer, making me a better coach and player.

I am a very competitive athlete and have played soccer throughout my life. Starting at a young age playing with my brothers, I learnt valuable skills that have helped me become the best soccer player I can be. I believe the development of basic skills at a young is vital in how a child will perform in all physical activities throughout their life. Little Kickers is giving children the chance to learn and experience a fantastic sport in a fun and energetic environment.

My favourite Little Kickers game would have to be Crocodiles, where the children dribble around the court whilst the coaches chase after them. The excitement and thrill the children get out of this activity is a perfect example of how learning can be fun. The children’s improvement that I witness from week to week is definitely and seeing their smiling faces is definitely the best part of coaching at Little Kickers.

A Little Bit About Us - Little Kickers Gold Coast

A VERY LEVEL PLAYING FIELD
We recognise that every child is an individual, and feel that children develop their skills best when they are playing with other kids of a similar age and ability.  As such, Little Kickers separate kids into four distinct age groups, which encourage each child to maximise their involvement and development potential.  In summary, the real joy of our 4 pronged approach (Little Kicks, Junior, Mighty and Mega Kickers) is that we can offer a gently staggered learning environment for all our students, an enjoyable yet challenging programme that is safe and always stays strictly within the student’s comfort zone.

Little Kicks®
**selected areas**
1½ to 2 years 3 + months

Setting off at a light trot, the most pressing priority here is something we refer to as ‘learning to learn.’
Simple problem-solving activities provide the perfect informal framework for encouraging our fledgling socceroos to advance their basic attention building and listening skills.
By playing fun games that include specific actions and movements children gain greater bodily control whilst simultaneously enhancing their blossoming balance, co-ordination and gross motor skills. Aside from learning how to strike stationary and moving soccer balls during directional play, children and parents also get the early opportunity to share those first unforgettable, goal-scoring adventures.
In essence Little Kicks provides a fun, safe learning environment where your child will be encouraged to move from parent-supported participation, to active, independent interaction.

Junior Kickers
2 years - 3½ years
From light trot to gentle canter our budding ball maestros are now at a point where they will be encouraged to participate in structured games and imaginative free-play, adding yet another dimension to their already flourishing footwork.
In other words, basic ball mastery is harnessed via multi-directional dribbling and striking. In addition child interaction and cooperation is actively encouraged as our coaches seek to stimulate greater social skills, sharing and overall team play - giving our pre-school pupils the in-built confidence to step away from their parents/carers and stand proud on their own two trainers.
It’s about now that our classes really start to have an impact on improving a child’s physical dexterity, particularly in the lower limbs and feet through a variety of ball-balancing games. The arrival of these newfound skills paves the way for our pupils to learn how best to move through the gears and how to change direction comfortably with the ball at their feet.

Mighty Kickers
3½ years to 5th birthday
With more basic options now at their disposal our next task is to couple your child’s blossoming physical and social confidence with a greater grasp of how to read the beautiful game. Shielding, first touch play and defensive positioning are all classic examples of simple skills that over time will become second nature. Add to this memory improvement, problem solving and team awareness and your child will be quickly demonstrating all the hallmarks of a well-rounded individual with a wider appreciation of team play.
Irrespective of what part sport plays in your child’s future, we honestly believe the capacity to participate in controlled play, to think outside the penalty box to concentrate on instructions and visually assess a game will hold them in good stead for the future.

Mega Kickers
**selected areas** 5 years to 7th birthday
There’s no need to leave at 5!  Megas Kickers was developed in response to popular demand – many children who attend Little Kickers classes want to continue to build their skills – both physical and social - once they have turned 5.  The Mega Kickers philosophy is divided into 3 core areas to enable them to do just this:
  1. Play: the greatest tool for development and learning is self-initiated play, which leads to excited and vigorous participation.  This in turn leads to rapid improvement.
  2. Practice: activities with limited touches and turns generally will have limited benefit. Activities with lots of turns and touches will facilitate greater growth at an individual rate within a group environment.  Simply put, the more you do it, the better you get!
  3. Understanding: within Mega Kickers classes our coaches focus not only on teaching children how to perform a skill, but also to start building an understanding of why the skill is needed.
Mega Kickers combines a series of activities that use imaginative play, familiar games, visual skill and creative participation to engage the interest of the child and makes them gain maximum enjoyment from participating.

Use the contact form today to find out how your child can get started in one of our great classes!

Meet our Burleigh coaches!

We asked Coach Colin, who is the lead coach at our Burleigh venue, to tell us a bit about himself and his role with Little Kickers -

"Hi my name is Colin Moore, I immigrated from Northern Ireland to Gold Coast in December 2010. I commenced my playing career as a young boy at local soccer clubs and by the age of 16 years old I was playing at a semi-professional level for Ballymena United Football Club in the Northern Irish Premier Division. Following a successful and lengthy playing career, I retired from playing competitively and began coaching soccer to both children, adults and persons with disabilities. I have completed my coaching badges and training with the Irish Football association, which are accredited by UEFA. I thoroughly enjoy passing on my skills and knowledge of the game to young people and feel a great sense of achievement and satisfaction as I watch their skills develop and abilities progress. I have been coaching soccer in Australia for several months, and working with Little Kickers has been fun, exciting and a fulfilling experience. I look forward to seeing the organisation grow in the up and coming months, and many future "socceroos" being produced."

Kicking along next to Coach Colin, is Coach James, our assistant coach at Burleigh. This is what Coach James told us -

"Ever since I can remember my life has revolved around playing football. I started coaching at 15 with Primary School children and have been coaching at Little Kickers since the start of this year. The eagerness and excitement on the children's faces as they run through the door to learn new skills and form friendships makes my job enjoyable and rewarding. Little Kickers sessions are all about having fun while progressing in football from a very young age."

If you would like to have your first free trial lesson, or if you would like to enrol your little kicker into one of our Burleigh classes, the class times are :

Junior Kickers - 8am & 10am
Mighty Kickers - 9am & 11am
